About the Education Committee GBF’s Education Committee meets monthly and is comprised of education advocates and stakeholders from community based organizations; social service agencies; community residents, parents, and leaders; alumni of neighborhood high schools; Chicago Public Schools central office and neighborhood school representation; and staff and representatives of local universities. The GBF Education Committee has become a unique, valuable, and rich network of partners where together we have helped to advance school, parent, and community partnerships and resources. In addition to serving as a hub for sharing and exchanging updated information about public schools, our Education Committee developed a framework of 7 Critical Elements of a High Quality School after surveying and interviewing parents, educators, youth, and community about what we need to strive towards if we are to educate successful students. The Education Committee is comprised of 30-plus education allies and stakeholders, which has been convening for about 5 years. Some of the education allies are former and retired high school alumni, community based organizations, social service agencies, university affiliates (University of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, Roosevelt University, DePaul University), Chicago Urban League, parents, Bronzeville area residents, and schools to name a few. Representatives from the Chicago Public Schools’ Chief Executive Office’s staff have become regular attending education committee members. Given the depth and diversity of the education committee, the Education Committee has become known as our community’s education ‘hub’ in which stakeholders discuss and process concerns and then develop strategies that seek to support high quality education for all children. The Formation of the Education Committee GBF has engaged in collaborations for community planning and school improvement processes such as through the Bronzeville Organizing Strategy Sessions, the Bronzeville 2010 Visioning Process, and the Community Weavers of which our Education Committee members have supported. From these various collaborations of which education and parental involvement were critical issue areas, the Federation’s Board urged that an Education Committee be formed to more adequately exchange information about schools and to develop strategies that complement and support our schools and parents.
